A plant that receives the nutrition needs will continue to live. But what if we took all its oxygen away. Do you think the plant can grow? Why?
Oxygen is needed for the plant to carry out cellular respiration. Glucose is first used by the cells during tissue respiration to provide energy for cellular activities. This only occurs when there is oxygen. Hence, when the plant is oxygen deprived, its cells are unable to produce energy to sustain the plant's life and it will die (assuming that the oxygen produced by the plant during photosynthesis is also removed).

the question does not state if there is light or not. but with light, the plant can photosynthesize, take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen (the qn only say it take away oxygen, not carbon dioxide), so when there is no light, the plant can take in oxygen. [other factors can affect too.]

but stored sucrose in the plant can still help the plant to survive a period of time?
ariel: i dont really agree with shi ying. for one, the qns say all the nutrition except oxygen is present. so naturally people will assume that light is present. this qns maybe can be further improved, by stating that light is present, since everyone is talking about it... and i like your explanation, short, simple, easy to understand and got straight to the point!but maybe can add more infomation about the 'duty' of oxygen...

ReplyDeleteDark reactions occur in the stroma. Carbon dioxide is converted to sugar using ATP and NADPH. This process is known as carbon fixation or the Calvin cycle. Carbon dioxide is combined with a 5-carbon sugar creating a 6-carbon sugar. The 6-carbon sugar is eventually broken-down into two molecules, glucose and fructose. These two molecules make sucrose or sugar.

i dont agree with the sentence. because, other blogs also assume that there is no light. then they go on explain the qn by saying that the plant use anaerobic respiration (anaerobic respiration- as long as the substrates are present, anaerobic respiration can carry out its process, without oxygen) or they will say that the plant will not live.
so, my opinion is that IF there is light, the plant photosynthesize, take in carbon dioxide and gives out oxygen. so when its at night (no light) the plant can take in oxygen, which the plant produce earlier, and give out carbon dioxide. so, the cycle goes on (if other factors is favourable), the plant can continue to live.
